Adult Evening Enrichment Classes
Spring 2017 (April & May)

Join us this spring for evening adult enrichment classes on the MSD campus! Bring a friend, bring a neighbor, bring your sister or your mother! These classes are open to all friends of the MSD community. Check out the options below and register safely and securely online. Play with Clay!    

This clay class will cover basic hand building, wheel throwing, and texture techniques using many different kinds of tools and materials. Get your hands dirty and create something amazing in a fun and relaxing environment, with other adults in our community! Basic glazing lessons will be given after all pieces are bisque fired. The final night of class, May 24, we will have a “gallery” show in the Art Barn to show off what you have created. Clay and individual pottery tool kits included in the cost of the class.

Joy Giles, Art Teacher, joined MSD in 2004. Joy has a BA degree in printmaking from the Kansas City Art Institute. She is an accomplished artist who has shown her work from Kansas to Japan. Joy has taught individuals to learn to love art, ranging in age from three through adulthood.

Gardening 101

Need some new tips and tricks to make your garden the best it could be? Always wanted to garden, but not sure where to start or how to keep things going? This class is perfect for new or continuing gardeners! Join Lexi, our amazing Urban Farm Manager, for an exploration of gardening goodness including:

  • Apr. 6 - Intro to Soil Gardening: Soil, light, water, weather, container versus in ground, garden placement considerations;  
  • Apr. 13 - I Have Garden Space, Now What: Soil testing, location, watering, light;
  • Apr. 20 - Seeds & Seedlings: What to grow, when to start, seed starting media, lights, potential problems, hardening off, how to plant, how to sow;
  • Apr. 27 - Ways to Grow: Square foot gardening and vertical trellising; 
  • May 4 - How & When to Harvest: Individual review of vegetables & herbs; and
  • May 11 - Seed Saving 101: introduction and tour of seed library, level review of vegetables, herbs, and flowers by level

Lexi Fickenscher, Urban Farm Manager, graduated from Oberlin College with a BA in Environmental Studies and has a Masters of Public Health with a focus in Epidemiology and Biostatistics from Oregon Health and Sciences University. She owns her own urban farm, Potter Highlands Produce, and before that she helped to create and run Duo Urban Farm that exclusively supplied produce to Duo Restaurant. Lexi joined the MSD Staff in 2016.
